Antique Khotan Carpet from Nazmiyal
Style: Khotan

Origin: East Turkestan

Size: 7. ft 02 in x 14 ft 02 in (2.18 m x 4.32 m)

Antique Khotan Oriental Rug, late nineteenth century. This carpet epitomizes the classic formality and grace of the finest antique Khotans. Groups of c-shaped volutes make up a trellis of openwork medallions that repeat rhythmically across the rich paprika ground. The complex system of three sandy gold cloudband and rosette borders contrasts effectively with the more finely wrought design of the field.

Antique Khotan Rug from East Turkestan, late nineteenth century. Though woven in east Turkestan, this is extremely rare and unusual antique Khotan has field and border designs derived from the Kuba rugs produced in the Caucasus over a thousand miles to the west, a remarkable testament to the ties among all rug-producing regions. An allover array of lovely rosettes in ivory, soft blues, and saffrons pulsates across the rich terracotta ground, enclosed by a striking border of s-volutes and geometricized vines. A veritable feast of intricate design and color, this carpet is extraordinary as well for its size.

Antique Khotan Oriental Rug 42419
Antique Khotan, East Turkestan, nineteenth century. Sprays of flowers arranged as a trellis or Mina Khani pattern of Persian derivation unfold with an almost mathematical precision across the field of this splendid antique Khotan. The pattern is so closely worked that little of the rich crimson field shows through. The adroit coloration of flowers achieves diagonal effects, complementing the ground color. The open simplicity and geometry of the borders provides a soothing framing contrast to the floral richness of the field.

These rugs with mihrabs in a row are known as saphs and are usually decorated with the Tree of Life motif. For a comparable example please see Christie’s, London, The Bernheimer Family Collection of Carpets, 14 February 1996, lot 184. As the Bernheimer saph, the present lot is long and narrow and has ten mihrabs as opposed to the general three or five. However, in this lot, no mihrab is the same. Colours and inner designs are different making each section entirely individual. For another related example see Murray L. Eiland, Chinese and Exotic Rugs, London, 1979, pl. 103, p. 123.
