Guide to the Art of Bihzad
Bihzad was a student of the great painter
Mawlana Wali Allah. Wali pianted from roughly
1447 to 1480 and had a profound impact on on
Bihzad and through him the whole of Persian
Miniature Painting..
Safavi Shah Tahmasp the first Safavi Shah I
transplanted the Herati Timurid school to Tabriz
in about 1510. Because of Ismael's son Tahmasp
Bihzad stayed in Herat and helped in the rearing
of Tahmasp. In 1522 Tahmap and Bihzad moved to
Tabriz where Bihzad became the head of the royal
atelier. Tahmasp nurtured the creative genius of
Timurid masters like Mir Mosavir and Bihzad.
Prince Zahiruddin
Muhammad Babur who went on to found the
Mughal Dynasty observed that Bihzad painted
"extremely
delicately" but did not paint beardless
faces well but that he did well with
bearded faces. in May - June of 1507 Babur
also observed that Shaybanid
Uzbek Wormwood Khan after taking Herat
behaved so badly that he took a pen and corrected
the painting of Bihzad. About May - June 1507.Baburnama
